Best Ways to Clean Your Deep Pile or Shaggy Carpet
Shaggy or deep pile carpets are so in trend and for a reason! Their luxurious, elegant, soft, fluffy and stylish characteristics are adored by many. But with these amazing qualities comes a drawback- a shaggy carpet has a pile that is longer than most other carpets, as well as its fibres, are cut longer to give it the desired “fluffy aesthetic”. This is the reason that dust and dirt can get trapped easily in it, making it more tedious to clean.
But the good news is there are ways to keep this fluffy addition to your home looking its best with a few insider cleaning methods, which we are going to share with you in this blog!
Let’s get started!
Make Deep Pile Carpets Fluffy Again!
Undergoing a regular clean for your shaggy carpet can reduce the number of deep cleans it will need later. Our experts recommend you do this weekly. There are a number of methods to do this:
The Light Cleaning Method:
1. Start by Removing Excess Dirt
Eliminating any loose dirt that is visible on the surface of your shaggy or deep pile carpet is an important process, to begin with, the cleaning process. This consists of beating your carpet to remove any dirt particles that may be stuck on the fibres. It is always best that you carry out this method outdoors with the end of a broom or mop, in order to get the most dirt out as possible.
Next, hang the carpet in a location that is sunny for a few hours such that the sun does not only dry up the carpet but also kills any type of bacteria that is thriving on it.
2. Vacuuming
Sure, vacuuming is a great and easy way to clean your shaggy carpet, but be careful. The long fibres can get caught or pulled, damaging the overall look of your carpet. That is why it’s always best to use the vacuum extension that comes with the main machine.
Make sure that after you are done cleaning the top, you flip over and clean the other side of the carpet as well.
3. Use Dry Shampoo (This method is optional)
You can also clean the shaggy or deep pile carpet with dry shampoo. This is a fairly common method to clean it, as you don’t have to stress about drying your carpet or damaging any fibres in the process.
To do this, start by applying a small amount of dry shampoo and brush it into the carpet with the cleaning head bristles of the vacuum. Ensure that the machine remains switched off throughout the whole process when you do this. Next, leave the shampoo to dry for the allocated time shown in the instructions on the dry shampoo bottle and lastly vacuum the remaining fragments!
The Deep Clean Method
There are times when you will notice that your shaggy carpet needs a more thorough clean. There are two ways to go about this to give your carpet the love it deserves!
1. Steam Cleaning
You can steam clean a deep pile carpet by either opting for a professional or buying or renting a machine yourself. However, we need to bring to light the damage you can cause to the carpet fibres if the process isn’t carried out properly.
Although, do not expect that steam cleaning will remove all the dirt- as this should be done beforehand with the method we mentioned above. Instead a steam clean ensures your carpet looks rejuvenated and fresh by killing any lurking allergies and dust mites.
Now that your shaggy carpet is damp after cleaning, make sure to gently squeeze out all the water before leaving it out in the sun to completely dry.
The thing to consider: A shaggy carpet can absorb quite a lot of water so the drying process may take longer than usual, but you can always use a fan to speed things up.
2. Hand Washing Your Shaggy Carpet
To do this, fill your bathtub with cold water and some bleach-free, unscented and sensitive- use laundry liquid (Please note that we do not mean fabric softener! Do not use this under any circumstances)
Next, place your shaggy carpet in this filled bathtub and gently move the carpet around to wash. Now, leave your carpet to soak for an hour and then rinse out any remaining solution in the water.
Lastly, squeeze away excess water and leave it to dry out in the open air!
What if My Deep Pile Carpet Has Stains or Spills? How Do I Clean It?
As one would expect, a shaggy carpet is stain resistant. However, given the length of its fibres, stains can become difficult to remove. But not impossible!
As soon as you notice a stain on your shaggy carpet, take a white kitchen cloth or towel and gently dab the area where the stain is visible. The white cloth ensures that you do not spread the colour from the cloth to the carpet. After you’re done removing excess liquid, our experts suggest you use a spot cleaning solution.
This is a quick and effective way to clean the stain from the shaggy carpet but be cautious, choosing the right cleaner is crucial which is why it’s best you leave it in the hands of the pros!
In case the stain has hardened, use a dull knife or a spoon and scrape it against the affected area and try to get it off as much as possible. Make sure you do not rub the stain. And if there is mud on the carpet, wait till it dries as this will make it easier to remove.
Next, mix equal amounts of water and white vinegar on a white cloth and dap this on the stained area. Lastly, let the carpet dry thoroughly.
